It's not an interesting choice, it's an irritating one. Not only does it mean retracing your steps every time you die to a boss, often past a gauntlet of just annoying enemies (those flies that shoot snot in four directions), it incentivises tedious gameplay: if you're trying to beat a difficult boss and get hit on the way, I find myself backtracking to the bench, healing, then killing more enemies, then healing, until I get to the boss. But I've evidently turned into a massive wet blanket because while both of them have their moments, overall I find myself just getting annoyed and shutting them off. I picked up two very highly-regarded but completely different games recently Hollow Knight and Burnout Paradise. Very few hold me for long, and most become boring or more often annoying within about 10 hours of playtime.
